Topographic Map Tiles

The Topo50 series encompasses detailed topographic maps at a 1:50,000 scale covering the New Zealand mainland and Chatham Islands. These maps offer precise geographic information essential for navigation by various means, environmental assessment, or geographic study. The series serves as the official topographic resource utilized by New Zealand emergency services and a broad range of outdoor users.

Production of these maps relies on:

• The New Zealand Geodetic Datum 2000 (NZGD2000), providing longitude and latitude coordinates
• The New Zealand Transverse Mercator 2000 (NZTM2000) projection, facilitating accurate flat-surface representation of Earth's curvature

For the Chatham Islands, maps are generated using the Chatham Islands Transverse Mercator 2000 (CITM2000) projection. All map tiles are sourced from the LINZ Data Service (http://data.linz.govt.nz/) under a Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 New Zealand licence.

Satellite Imagery

The LINZ initiative has prioritized acquiring the most current publicly available aerial imagery of New Zealand—covering approximately 95% of the country. These images are captured via airborne sensors and provide high-fidelity visualizations of the landscape, suitable for landscape analysis or tracking changes over time.

Sourced from the LINZ Data Service and licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 New Zealand licence (http://www.linz.govt.nz/data/licensing-and-using-data/attributing-aerial-imagery-data), the imagery complements the topographic data to offer rich contextual mapping support.
